Kathmandu. Volkswagen has announced that it will use a new platform and cheaper batteries in all its electric vehicles from 2026. According to the plan unveiled in Germany on May 14, the company will now introduce vehicles based on a new platform called MEB+, which will use cheaper but longer-lasting LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries instead of expensive nickel-based batteries. The move is expected to reduce the price of EVs and facilitate access to a competitive market. Companies including Tesla have already approved LFP batteries, as these batteries are relatively cheap, less prone to fire, and have a long-term durability. Volkswagen’s strategy is believed to be a ‘cost-first’ approach to combat cheap EV competition from China. Due to the concessions and preferences given by China to EV and battery manufacturers, other brands are currently struggling to compete with Chinese brands in the global market.
